We dig the mud ourselves from a deposit about a kilometre south of the deck, sieve it and warm it. Mud in a jar has usually been sitting in a warehouse in Amman for two years. You get coated head to foot, then you sit in the shade for twenty minutes while it dries. Not in the sun: sun-baked mud cracks and pulls and does nothing extra for your skin, whatever the photographs suggest. Rinse, float for a maximum of twenty minutes, rinse again in fresh water, then thirty minutes in our dry salt room with a book. Mint tea at the end. The honest part. Do not shave or wax within forty-eight hours; the water finds every nick and it burns for a good ten minutes. Getting it in your eyes is genuinely painful, so we hand out squeeze bottles of fresh water and we mean for you to use them. No diving, no splashing, nobody swims face down. The shoreline retreats about a metre a year, so the walk to the water crosses dried marl that is uneven and hot underfoot. Wear sandals you don't mind ruining.

Salt scrub, hot spring, then two hours of doing absolutely nothing under a fig tree. Best money I spent in Jordan.

We run wellness at 430 metres below sea level, which is a strange address for anything. The air is heavy with oxygen and bromide, the water holds you up whether you want it to or not, and the black mud on our stretch of shore is the same stuff that got exported to Egypt two thousand years ago. There are four of us: two therapists trained in Amman, a yoga teacher from Sweimeh, and Odeh, who has watched this shoreline retreat about thirty metres since he started guiding here. We don't promise transformation. We promise mud dug the same week, clean freshwater showers, cold drinking water, and someone who will tell you plainly when it is too hot to be outside.

The float and the mud were as good as promised. The private retreat framing was optimistic - it's a hotel spa selling day passes and it feels like one.

Glad the tea landed, Basel. The jeep is 34 years old and has opinions, but she always gets us home.

The hot springs at Ma'in are genuinely hot - 45 degrees under the waterfall. Standing under falling boiling water with the canyon walls above is a peculiar and excellent way to spend a morning.

Setting is genuinely special and I'd go back for the view alone. The session was aimed at complete beginners, so if you have a regular practice you'll be underoccupied.

Lovely to read, Ji-woo. Say hello to the goats from us.

My shoulders had been locked up for months from a desk job and the therapist found it in about ninety seconds without me saying a word.

Really pleased you got up there, Sophie. Not everyone makes the last 200 metres.

Appreciate the honest note about the timing, Nour. We start earlier now and it makes all the difference.
